The Peace Court has historically played a significant role in facilitating judicial proceedings and reducing the backlog of minor crimes and disputes in courts, holding the highest number of courts in terms of quantity. The Peace Court, in its current form and jurisdiction, is a familiar institution that has been revived by the Conflict Resolution Councils Law enacted in 1402. According to this law, the Peace Court is a "legal-criminal-administrative-personal status" authority with the nature of a "specialized first-instance judicial court." All the competencies of the dispute Resolution Council in the law enacted in 1394 have been transferred to the Peace Court, alongside an increase in the number of cases and new, congested disputes. In the new law, the relative jurisdiction of the dispute Resolution Council has been eliminated, and the council no longer has the authority to issue rulings even by mutual consent; it can only mediate for peace and reconciliation. It seems the legislator was dissatisfied with the performance of the dispute Resolution Council. Consequently, in search of a replacement, the revival of "Peace Courts" was undertaken with a nod to the judicial organization laws of the early Constitutional era. This article employs a descriptive-analytical method and critically examines the Peace Court and its jurisdictions. The findings indicate that there is no clear criterion for determining the jurisdiction of this court; it appears that the sole purpose was to redirect numerous cases to a new authority. As a result, various cases that are significantly heterogeneous in terms of importance and nature have been placed under the jurisdiction of this court, which could cast doubt on and challenge its effectiveness in improving the efficiency of the judicial system.
